Aadhaar Mobile Number Update Guide (ASK Appointment)
Why mobile linking strictly requires biometric verification at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, appointment booking steps, and fee schedule.
- Mobile number cannot be linked or updated online; in-person biometric authentication is mandatory by law
- Statutory fee is strictly ₹50 at all authorized Aadhaar Seva Kendras and Post Office branches
- Booking an online appointment via uidai.gov.in eliminates queue waiting times
1. Why Mobile Update Cannot Be Done Online
A widespread misconception is that citizens can update their mobile number on the internet. Under the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, UIDAI strictly prohibits online mobile number modifications for security reasons.
Because your linked mobile number receives authentication OTPs for banking, income tax filings, passport applications, and SIM verification, permitting online updates would expose citizens to account hijacking. In-person biometric (fingerprint/iris) verification is mandated by UIDAI regulations.
2. Booking ASK Appointment Online
To avoid long queues, book an online appointment before visiting:
Step 1: Visit appointments.uidai.gov.in and select 'Book an Appointment'.
Step 2: Choose your city/location to select an authorized Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK).
Step 3: Select 'Aadhaar Update', enter your mobile number and captcha, and authenticate via OTP.
Step 4: Enter your Aadhaar number and tick the 'Mobile Number' checkbox.
Step 5: Pick a convenient date and time slot, pay the ₹50 fee online (or choose pay-at-counter), and download the Appointment Slip.
3. Documents Required & Fee Structure
Documents: You do NOT need to bring any documentary proof to update your mobile number. Simply bring your physical Aadhaar card or know your 12-digit Aadhaar number.
Fee: The statutory government fee is exactly ₹50. Always demand an official printed computer receipt with GST details.
4. What Happens at the Center
At the center, present your appointment slip to receive a token. When called to the operator station, provide your new 10-digit mobile number.
The operator places your finger on the biometric scanner to authenticate your identity against UIDAI servers. No forms need to be filled manually.
5. Processing Timeline & Confirmation
The operator hands you an Update Acknowledgment Slip containing a 28-digit Enrolment ID (EID). The mobile number is typically updated within 2 to 7 working days.
Once active, you will receive an SMS confirmation from UIDAI stating that your mobile number has been successfully updated.
