Key Highlights & Rules to Know
  • UIDAI strongly recommends all citizens holding 10-year-old Aadhaar cards to revalidate their records with current documents
  • Updating Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) is completely free on the myAadhaar portal
  • Revalidation helps maintain up-to-date KYC records for bank accounts, SIM cards, and government welfare schemes

1. Why UIDAI Mandates 10-Year Revalidation

Under Regulation 16A of the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, Aadhaar number holders are encouraged to update their Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) documents at least once every 10 years.

Over a decade, individuals frequently relocate, change jobs, or update official records. Uploading current documentation maintains database integrity and eliminates authentication failures during government subsidy disbursements.

2. Who Needs to Update Documents

If your Aadhaar was issued over 10 years ago (e.g. between 2010 and 2016) and you have not completed any demographic address or biometric update since, your myAadhaar dashboard will display a prompt recommending document submission.

Note: This process only revalidates your existing recorded details. If your address has changed, you must use the 'Address Update' service instead.

3. Step-by-Step Document Upload on myAadhaar

Step 1: Log in to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in using your Aadhaar number and mobile OTP.

Step 2: On the dashboard, click 'Document Update'. Read the service overview and click Next.

Step 3: Verify that your visible demographic particulars (name, gender, date of birth, and address) are 100% correct. Check the confirmation box.

Step 4: Under Proof of Identity (PoI), select your document (e.g. PAN Card or Voter ID) and upload a clean scan under 2 MB.

Step 5: Under Proof of Address (PoA), select your address document (e.g. Electricity bill or Bank statement) and upload.

Step 6: Submit the application. Download the acknowledgment receipt containing your 14-digit URN.

4. Approved Proof of Identity & Address Documents

Standard Identity Proofs: PAN Card, Indian Passport, Voter ID Card, Driving Licence, or Ration Card.

Standard Address Proofs: Electricity/Water/Gas bill under 3 months, Bank passbook, Passport, or Registered rent agreement.

5. Verification Status & Confirmation

Track your URN on myAadhaar under 'Check Enrolment & Update Status'. UIDAI verification teams scrutinize the uploaded scans against your existing profile. Upon completion, your records are marked as verified.

UIDAI has stated that Aadhaar cards will not be arbitrarily deactivated for missing the document update. However, revalidating ensures smooth biometric authentication for banking and prevents verification hurdles during passport or government scheme enrollments.
