Learner Licence Online Test Guide (Signs & Mock Test)

1. Online Test Format & Passing Rules

The Learner's Licence test on Sarathi evaluates an applicant's foundational understanding of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, road safety regulations, and standard Indian traffic signages.

The exam comprises 15 to 20 multiple-choice questions. You have 30 to 45 seconds per question. To pass, you must correctly answer at least 60% of the questions (typically 9 out of 15 or 12 out of 20, depending on state RTO regulations).

2. Mandatory / Regulatory Traffic Signs

Mandatory signs give orders that must be obeyed under penalty of law. With few exceptions, they are circular in shape with red borders:

• Stop Sign: Octagonal shape with red background and white lettering (the only 8-sided road sign).
• Give Way Sign: Inverted equilateral triangle with white background and red border.
• No Entry: Red circular disc with a horizontal white bar or slash.
• Speed Limit Signs: Circular discs displaying the maximum permitted speed in km/h (e.g. 50, 80).
• Overtaking Prohibited: Red circle depicting two cars side by side.
• Compulsory Turn Left / Right: Blue circular signs with white arrows indicating mandatory directional movements.

3. Cautionary & Warning Signs

Cautionary signs alert drivers to potential road hazards ahead. They are triangular in shape with red borders and black symbols:

• Right / Left Hairpin Bend: Alerts driver to an acute curve requiring sharp speed reduction.
• Narrow Bridge Ahead: Warns that the carriageway narrows, requiring single-lane traffic flow.
• Pedestrian Crossing: Depicts a person crossing stripes; requires drivers to yield to walkers.
• School Ahead: Depicts children carrying schoolbags; requires extreme caution and speed reduction.
• Unguarded Railway Crossing: Depicts a steam locomotive; alerts driver to check tracks before crossing.

4. Right of Way & General Road Regulations

Questions frequently test fundamental driving ethics and overtaking laws:

Roundabout Rules: Traffic already circulating inside the roundabout has right of way over entering vehicles.

Emergency Vehicles: Drivers must immediately pull to the left and stop to grant free passage to ambulances and fire service vehicles.

Overtaking Rules: Always overtake from the right side of the vehicle ahead. Never overtake on curves, pedestrian crossings, bridges, or steep crests.

5. Home Webcam Test Do's and Don'ts

If taking the test from home via Aadhaar face authentication: Ensure you are seated in a well-lit room with no backlighting. Look directly into the camera. Having another person in the camera frame, looking away from the screen, or opening background browser tabs triggers automatic disqualification by the proctoring engine.
